Statement of Teaching Philosophy
My number one goal is to get students to see how significant science actually is. In today’s society, it is crucial for students to embrace science to stay competitive in the global economy.
In order to accommodate the many different learning styles that I will encounter in the classroom, I will implement various instructional formats. Traditional lecture format will be rare but will still have a place, especially when introducing complex and abstract units. In my classroom, most class periods will provide opportunities for students to learn through classroom discussion, hands-on activities, inquiry based labs, and other student directed activities. In this environment, students must be active learners and have control over their own learning. In addition, students will be assessed through traditional means such as tests and quizzes, but there will also be many other alternative assessments for students to express their knowledge and understanding of the science content.
Another major goal is to get students to realize that science is fun, which can be accomplished through the aforementioned differentiated instruction. It is my duty to use these methods and other means to stimulate the interest of the students.
I will stress that my classroom will maintain an environment that not only promotes learning but also respect for others, cooperation, and positive attitudes. Respect will be emphasized so that students may feel comfortable and free to express their ideas and opinions without fear of being criticized by myself or their peers.
