Project Rubric
Parent Letter
Dear Parent or Guardian,
I am informing you by letter that your child will have the opportunity to participate in a two and a half week long project in my chemistry class this semester. The title of this project is “Cooking is Hot, Hot, Hot!” and has three main components that your child is expected to complete/participate in by the end of the two and a half weeks. The first component is to take a field trip to Yamato Japanese Steakhouse. For more information about the field trip, please visit the tab entitled “Field Trip.” The second component is to create a paper that includes recipes for a three course meal, descriptive paragraphs of rationale for choosing a method of preparation, and calculations used as evidence of rationale. The third component is to create a menu with the exact three course meal that was chosen, the method of preparation, and the cook time and give a three minute presentation explaining a brief rationale for choosing the method of preparation. Your child has the option to work with two other classmates, one other classmate, or alone. Throughout this two and a half week period, all daily lessons that are taught will be based on this project to help your child, and the rest of the class, to better understand required & state-mandated material for chemistry.
I wish to make your child’s experience in my class a safe and enjoyable one. Because I have planned a field trip into this project, I will be sending permission slips home with your child this week. The bulk of the work in this project will be completed in class, so students will not be required to do extra work outside of the classroom anymore than in a traditional unit. The supplies and resources will be supplied by a grant that is sponsoring the project.
Parents are more than welcome to attend the menu presentations and see what the students have completed during the length of the project. The presentations are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, __/__/__ and __/__/__ during your child's regularly scheduled class period.
Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns about the project. My email address *****@schooldistrict.edu. Also, feel free to contact me by telephone at ***-***-****.
Sincerely,
Ms. Pettit
