Dear Parents or Guardians,
I am your son/daughter’s chemistry teacher, and I am delighted to have your child in my class. I am looking forward to a very successful year, and I know you are, too. I have high expectations for your child and I will do all that I can to help your son/daughter achieve those expectations.
Chemistry is a very demanding course. The material covered in this course will include all items required by the state in the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards, as well as items covered in testing for college in the ACT and SAT. This class will contain only some time spent on lectures and the rest will be spent on the student’s active involvement in exploring the concepts with guidance. This active involvement includes but is not limited to: class or group discussions, inquiry-based labs, hands-on activities, and cooperative learning activites/projects.
Each student will need a nonprogrammable calculator, lab folder with prongs and pockets, and a three-ringed binder with dividers for each chapter. These materials should be brought to class every day, as well as assignments and pencils/pens.
In this course, we will cover 23 chapters in 36 weeks. There will be a quiz given about halfway through each chapter and at least two or three test will be given each nine weeks. Students will be required to read each chapter, take book notes, and complete each homework assignment. Homework will be assigned regularly, including weekends, and is due the next school day in class. Third nine weeks tests will also be given at the end of the first and third nine weeks (the semester exams at the end of the second and fourth nine weeks will count as the nine weeks test for that term). Tests and quizzes are worth 40% of the grades, homework is worth 10%, lab write ups and notebook checks are worth 20%, participation is worth 10%, and the nine weeks test is worth 20%. Any missed work, tests, or quizzes must be made up the day of returning from an absence.
Labs are crucial in this course and the use of tools and technology is also required. Safety rules are important and must be strictly adhered to. Each student will bring home a copy of the lab safety page, which must be read and signed by both you and your student. A violation of these rules will result in an immediate referral. Labs will include directions for use of tools and materials and a review of the safety concerns. Students are required to follow all of the school rules and classroom rules, which can be found in the Student Code of Conduct. Other classroom rules also apply. Failure to abide by these rules will result in parent contact and meetings, detentions, and referrals.
I encourage you to contact me during the year with any questions or concerns that you may have. Contact me by phone (407-590-1966) or email ([email protected]). I look forward to meeting all of you in person at the parent night at the beginning of the year. Your student’s progress can be checked on the Infinite Campus Portal, which can be accessed through the school website (http://buchholz.sbac.edu). Grades and attendance are updated regularly.
Volunteers and donations are always appreciated. Any guest speakers who work in any science fields relating to chemistry or any of the topics in this course would be welcomed, and parents are always welcome to help give demonstrations or organize activities or labs. Since this is a science course, we are always in need of paper towels, stir sticks, etc.
As I mentioned, I have extremely high expectations of all my students. I am asking for your help to maintain those expectations by checking with your son/daughter periodically to make sure that his/her work is being done. I am available to help students individually before school, during my prep periods, and after school.
I look forward to a wonderful year with your son/daughter in this class!
Sincerely,
Amber Pettit
